About the Role

As the first Data Governance Manager at Upvest, you will become the single owner of the entire market data governance function. You'll manage relationships with market data providers, negotiate and maintain licensing agreements, and ensure redistribution arrangements are compliant and commercially sound. Reporting to the Head of Network, you'll sit at the intersection of legal, commercial, and technical work, advising the business on what's possible as new products and asset classes are brought to market. You'll take ownership of provider relationships end-to-end, lead commercial negotiations independently, and build governance processes from the ground up at a fast-growing fintech.

Requirements

  • A law degree or equivalent legal training is strongly preferred; candidates without formal legal background but with 5+ years of deep, hands-on market data licensing experience will equally be considered
  • 3–6 years of experience working in the market data space, ideally from within a data vendor (e.g. SIX, FactSet, ICE, Bloomberg, Refinitiv/LSEG), exchange, or the market data function of a financial institution or fintech
  • Strong working knowledge of exchange licensing frameworks, redistribution rights, derived data rules, and direct reporting obligations
  • Ability to run a commercial negotiation from term sheet to signature, hold your ground with vendor counterparts, and know when to push and when to compromise
  • Understanding of how market data is distributed - entitlement systems, data feeds, APIs - and ability to engage credibly with Product and Engineering teams
  • Detail-driven and documentation-oriented, capable of bringing order to a complex, multi-provider licensing landscape
  • Fluency in English; German is a plus but not required
  • Based in Berlin (mandatory)

Responsibilities

  • Own the end-to-end relationship with Upvest's market data and static asset data providers
  • Lead commercial negotiations independently and end-to-end, from initial terms through to signature and renewal
  • Ensure that Upvest's redistribution of market data to B2B clients is properly licensed across all use cases and client types
  • Fulfill entitlement and usage reporting obligations to direct reporting exchanges and data sources
  • Maintain accurate records of Upvest's data consumption and distribution to support audit readiness at all times
  • Act as the expert voice on market data licensing for internal teams, advising on what data products clients can access, at what cost, and under what licensing conditions
  • Lead the assessment, selection, and onboarding of new market data providers and exchanges as Upvest expands into new asset classes and markets
  • Establish and maintain best-practice governance processes for market data management
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities through licence renegotiation, consolidation, or usage optimisation
  • Monitor policy and commercial changes from exchanges and vendors, assess their impact on Upvest, and proactively communicate material developments to relevant stakeholders
  • Provide support in the management of other Network partners where needed, working closely with the Head of Network
