About the Role
The CTO will partner with the CEO and executive team to define engineering strategy, own enterprise technology and architectural direction, shape standards and engineering culture, develop an agentic programming philosophy, assess venture feasibility, manage technology budgets, grow engineering leadership, and represent IOG externally.
Requirements
- Engineering philosophy and experience setting engineering, architectural, and security standards across a large distributed organization
- Deep expertise in Web3 technologies
- Strong systems thinking and ability to predict emergent behavior
- Clear perspective on AI's impact on software engineering
- Hands-on technical credibility, including committing code and reviewing engineering work
- Experience leading technical due diligence for acquisitions, partnerships, and investments
- Ability to explain complex technical concepts to boards, investors, and executives
- Strong external profile at senior industry levels
- Deep familiarity with formal verification, cryptographic correctness, zero-knowledge proofs, consensus protocol verification, and provably secure system design
- Significant senior or executive technology leadership experience
- Senior technical leadership in a high-growth technology, blockchain, or venture studio environment
- Deep demonstrable experience in Web3, blockchain, or distributed systems
- Experience shaping a developer ecosystem at scale
- Experience contributing to executive strategy, board materials, and investment decisions
- Experience operating at the intersection of research and product
Responsibilities
- Work with the CEO to define future engineering strategy
- Own enterprise technology and architectural direction
- Shape developer ecosystem standards, culture, tooling, and practices
- Develop and embed an agentic programming philosophy
- Ensure the roadmap is technically sound, resourced, and delivered at velocity
- Assess venture viability and technical feasibility of new ideas
- Set technology thesis and architectural standards
- Attract and develop engineers through a Centre of Excellence model
- Manage enterprise technology budgets and strategic investments
- Set policies and allocate technical resources with executive autonomy
- Recruit, mentor, and serve as technical authority for engineers
- Provide technical health metrics and identify architectural risks
- Participate in investment, venture acceleration, and acquisition discussions
- Serve as IOG's primary external technical voice
- Maintain relationships with researchers, founders, and technical talent
- Translate technical strategy for boards, investors, and executives
- Lead the technology function and own its leadership bench
- Champion diversity, culture, and leadership excellence
