About the Role
You will architect, evolve, and optimize the data platform behind high-volume transactional applications. You will design scalable MySQL schemas and data models, optimize queries and indexes, and create safe database migration and deployment strategies. You will develop production software, reusable libraries, testing frameworks, and developer tooling that improve the persistence layer and simplify data access. You will investigate complex production issues involving performance, locking, concurrency, and data integrity. You will also establish database engineering standards, strengthen monitoring and disaster recovery, lead architecture reviews, evaluate emerging technologies, and mentor engineers in data modeling and performance optimization.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience
- Strong backend application development experience with Java, C#, Go, Python, Kotlin, Scala, or a similar modern language
- Expert-level MySQL experience in large-scale production environments
- Deep knowledge of SQL optimization, query execution plans, indexing, transactions, isolation levels, locking, concurrency, schema design, normalization, replication, and high availability
- Experience designing scalable database schemas for high-volume transactional applications
- Experience troubleshooting complex application and database performance problems
- Experience implementing database migration strategies for continuous delivery
- Strong understanding of software architecture, distributed systems, and engineering best practices
- Experience leading technical initiatives and influencing architectural decisions across engineering teams
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills
- Ability to explain complex technical concepts to engineers and cross-functional stakeholders
- Experience or strong interest in improving developer productivity through automation, tooling, database testing frameworks, benchmarking, and engineering practices
Responsibilities
- Design and evolve MySQL schemas for high-volume transactional workloads
- Improve data platform architecture through online schema changes, low-downtime migrations, blue-green deployments, and scalability initiatives
- Analyze and optimize SQL queries, indexes, and execution plans
- Develop production-quality persistence software, developer tooling, and data platform capabilities
- Design scalable and maintainable data models
- Build reusable libraries, frameworks, and tooling that simplify data access
- Lead database and application performance-tuning initiatives
- Modernize database architecture, deployment processes, and operational reliability
- Design and implement safe, repeatable database migrations for continuous delivery
- Investigate and resolve production issues involving performance, database behavior, locking, concurrency, and data integrity
- Establish standards for schema design, indexing, SQL development, migrations, and data access patterns
- Improve database monitoring, backups, disaster recovery, and operational resilience
- Use Google Cloud Platform services to improve data platform reliability, scalability, and observability
- Mentor engineers in data modeling, SQL optimization, MySQL practices, and application performance
- Lead technical design discussions and architecture reviews
- Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend scalable and maintainable solutions
- Serve as a technical advisor on database architecture, application performance, and data platform practices
