About the Role
You will lead a backend team of approximately 10 people and oversee hiring, onboarding, evaluation, and organizational operations. You will guide architecture and quality standards with the Tech Lead, set technical priorities, manage Agile practices, support employee growth through feedback and one-to-ones, and build a high-performing team culture.
Requirements
- Experience directly leading an engineering organization or the capability to perform a management role through extensive Tech Lead involvement in mentoring and organizational operations
- Understanding of backend technologies including Java, Kotlin, and Spring Boot
- Knowledge of object-oriented design principles, design patterns, and architecture patterns
- Experience applying and customizing Agile processes including sprints, Kanban, and backlog management
- Experience with performance management, feedback, one-to-one meetings, and goal setting
- Practical experience improving underperformers and motivating high performers
- Ability to negotiate logically with stakeholders and reach agreements between technical constraints and business goals
- Experience growing a small team to more than 10 people, including hiring, onboarding, and organizational setup
- Experience acting as a control tower during major outages or security incidents
- Experience applying engineering management practices from IT unicorns or big technology companies
Responsibilities
- Lead a backend team of approximately 10 people
- Manage hiring, onboarding, evaluations, and overall organizational operations
- Review architecture direction, technology stacks, and quality standards with the Tech Lead
- Participate in long-term technical roadmap planning
- Make decisions balancing business impact, engineering cost, technical debt, new features, stability, and performance
- Set priorities based on business requirements and team resources
- Establish and improve sprint operations, backlog management, reviews, retrospectives, and Agile processes using tools such as JIRA
- Support employee growth through regular one-to-one meetings and feedback
- Coach underperformers and design growth opportunities for high performers
- Build psychological safety and high standards through mutual respect and feedback
