About the Role
You will support the identification and management of Japanese and broader Asian private-market managers, with a focus on venture capital, growth equity, and buyout funds. You will source and evaluate opportunities, lead investment due diligence, assess co-investments and secondary transactions, prepare investment memoranda, negotiate partnership terms, and help construct fund portfolios. You will monitor investments, contribute market intelligence and research, support investor and marketing activities, and mentor junior team members.
Requirements
- 6–8 years of investing analysis and due diligence experience; candidates with 4–6 years and strong potential may be considered for a Senior Associate role
- Experience investing in the Japan market through fund investments, co-investments, or secondaries
- Native-level Japanese language skills and strong English language skills
- Proven investing experience at a top institution focused on technology investments in primary private investments, secondaries, and/or direct investments
- Strong modeling, organizational, and writing skills
- Deep understanding of private equity, venture, and technology trends in Japan and Asia
- Ability to synthesize complex data clearly
- Ability to interact effectively with clients, general partners, and colleagues in Japanese and English
- Ability to work independently in an integrated global team
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally
- Desire to build a career in private capital investing
- MBA or similar advanced degree preferred but not required
Responsibilities
- Meet with general partner groups to evaluate potential investment opportunities focused on Japan
- Conduct market research on investment sectors and themes
- Lead and conduct investment due diligence using qualitative and quantitative analysis
- Perform due diligence on co-investments and secondary transactions
- Prepare investment memoranda and participate in internal investment committee discussions
- Negotiate partnership terms with counsel and coordinate closings
- Support fund portfolio construction and evaluation
- Provide market intelligence and thought leadership on Japan investment and industry trends
- Author internal and external research and thought pieces
- Mentor and manage junior team members
- Attend annual meetings
- Review quarterly reports and related materials
- Document compliance with investment guidelines
- Monitor the investment pipeline and allocation planning
- Support marketing presentations for prospective clients and consultants
- Generate co-investment and secondary deal flow by marketing firm capabilities
- Support existing investor relationships and firm business initiatives
