About the Role
Act as the technical guardian of the Cards squad, overseeing architecture and delivery of BVNK's card issuing and transaction platform while remaining hands-on in code. Define technical roadmaps, drive architectural decisions, coordinate delivery, mentor engineers, and build secure, compliant systems spanning crypto and fiat rails.
Requirements
- 8–12+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 3–5+ years in senior or technical leadership roles.
- Experience designing and delivering complex scalable systems such as microservices, event-driven architectures, or high-throughput APIs.
- Experience serving as the primary technical decision-maker for a team or domain.
- Strong understanding of card payments, issuing programs, or transaction processing in regulated environments.
- Enthusiasm for AI-assisted development tooling.
- Experience with PCI-DSS or similar security and regulatory frameworks.
- Experience leading complex initiatives end to end.
- Experience mentoring and developing engineers.
- Strong proficiency in Java and Spring Boot.
- Strong understanding of RESTful APIs, system integration, and SQL or NoSQL data modeling.
- Understanding of AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
- Experience with observability and reliability tooling.
- Strong communication skills.
- Crypto/fiat payment rails and issuer integrations familiarity is a plus.
- Willingness to participate in an out-of-hours on-call rota.
Responsibilities
- Define and drive technical architecture for the cards platform, including card issuing, tokenization, transaction processing, and settlement.
- Act as the primary technical decision-maker within the squad.
- Lead design and delivery of scalable, compliant systems, APIs, and distributed services.
- Own the technical roadmap for cards engineering.
- Coordinate delivery across card issuance, transactions, settlements, and compliance workstreams.
- Contribute hands-on through development, debugging, optimization, and code reviews.
- Mentor and develop engineers through coaching, pairing, and constructive feedback.
- Promote testing, CI/CD, observability, reliability, and security best practices.
- Lead technical assessments and integration design with third-party card providers.
- Remove technical blockers and make trade-off decisions.
- Facilitate collaboration across squads and represent cards engineering in technical forums.
- Partner with Product and Business to translate requirements into technical solutions.
- Improve monitoring, incident response, and deployment practices.
