About the Role
You will own mobile robot mechanical subsystems from concept through production. You will design chassis, drivetrains, suspension, actuation, payload mechanisms, and structures; perform engineering analysis and validation; optimize designs for manufacturing; collaborate across disciplines; and mentor engineers.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
- At least 8 years of mechanical design experience
- At least 3 years developing mobile robots, AGVs/AMRs, automation equipment, autonomous vehicles, drones, or similar electromechanical systems
- Experience designing electromechanical systems for deep-freeze and condensing environments
- Expertise with SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD software
- Knowledge of GD&T, drawing release, BOM management, and PLM/PDM systems
- Background in machine design, structural analysis, FEA, kinematics, tolerance analysis, and drivetrain design
- Experience developing and validating prototypes and test plans
- Knowledge of machining, sheet metal fabrication, injection molding, and DFM/DFA
- Familiarity with mobile robotics safety standards, including ISO 3691 or ANSI/ITSDF
- Valid driver's license
Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of mobile robot mechanical systems
- Design and integrate motion systems and drivetrain components
- Perform torque, speed, durability, and lifecycle analysis
- Develop mechanisms and structures that meet performance, reliability, and manufacturability requirements
- Perform FEA, kinematic studies, tolerance stack-ups, and validation testing
- Drive Design for Manufacturing and Assembly with manufacturing partners and suppliers
- Integrate mechanical designs into complete robotic systems
- Mentor junior engineers and support design reviews, documentation, releases, and field validation
- Travel to support development, integration, testing, and customer deployments
