About the Role
You design, build, and maintain Scala-based backend systems for auto-liquidation, risk evaluation, and trading services. You develop actor-based systems, own features from specification through production handoff, design PostgreSQL data models, troubleshoot distributed production issues, improve code quality and observability, contribute to architecture, and mentor junior engineers.
Requirements
- 5+ years of backend software engineering experience
- Experience building production systems handling real-time data, concurrency, and high availability
- Strong hands-on Scala expertise
- Experience with actor-based concurrency models such as Akka or Pekko
- Solid PostgreSQL skills including schema design, indexing, and query optimization
- Experience with event-driven architectures and message buses such as Kafka or Pub/Sub
- Ability to troubleshoot distributed systems and isolate root causes
- Ability to write technical specifications, scope work, and identify risks
- High standards for code, tests, documentation, and pull requests
- Ability to adapt quickly when priorities shift
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple complex backend initiatives
- Trading platform, fintech, or capital markets experience is a bonus
- Understanding of trading concepts is a bonus
- Familiarity with Protobuf, gRPC, or schema-based service contracts is a bonus
- Experience modernizing legacy Scala systems is a bonus
- Observability experience is a bonus
- Enterprise or business-to-business partner integration experience is a bonus
Responsibilities
- Design and implement Scala backend services for evaluation, risk, and trading workloads
- Build and evolve actor-based systems
- Own features from technical specifications through production handoff
- Design PostgreSQL data models and database changes
- Contribute to shared schemas, Protobuf, and SQL repositories
- Diagnose and resolve complex backend issues and production incidents
- Analyze logs and trace distributed flows
- Drive code quality through pull request reviews and development testing
- Improve instrumentation and observability
- Collaborate with engineering and product stakeholders to scope work
- Contribute to architectural decisions and technical debt remediation
- Modernize legacy Scala services
- Evaluate new event bus technologies
- Mentor junior team members
- Develop expertise in the evaluation platform and partner integrations
