About the Role
You will lead research on the mechanical behavior, failure modes, and thermophysical properties of nuclear fuel cladding and core materials. You will develop testing methods, analyze data, work with irradiated materials, collaborate with partners, publish results, and present findings.
Requirements
- Ph.D. in materials science, nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline
- Six or more years of professional experience
- Excellent verbal, presentation, and writing skills
- Track record of high-impact publications and conference presentations in nuclear materials
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance
- Pass a pre-placement drug test and participate in ongoing random drug testing
- Visa sponsorship is not available
Responsibilities
- Lead R&D programs on nuclear fuel cladding and core materials
- Develop and apply transient testing techniques for reactor operating and accident conditions
- Evaluate hydrogen effects and hydride morphology in zirconium-alloy cladding
- Use digital image correlation and instrumentation to measure mechanical-test conditions and failure
- Perform work in radiological laboratories and coordinate with hot-cell staff
- Analyze experimental data and document methods and uncertainty
- Develop research concepts and publish and present findings
- Collaborate with experimentalists, computational scientists, and engineers
