About the Role
Sugar is seeking a Founding Engineer to make foundational architecture decisions, ship secure and scalable production systems, build financial and crypto infrastructure integrations, and help shape the technical roadmap and future engineering team.
Requirements
- At least five years of professional software engineering experience.
- Strong recent experience building and operating production systems with TypeScript and JavaScript.
- Meaningful professional experience in both crypto and fintech environments.
- Experience at venture-backed companies between Seed and Series C.
- Strong backend or full-stack fundamentals, including API design, integrations, and data modelling.
- Experience owning technically complex products from architecture through production.
- Sound judgment around security, reliability, and data integrity.
- High agency and comfort working without extensive process, documentation, or management layers.
- A product-minded approach and ability to balance speed with engineering discipline.
- Experience with credit, lending, payments, banking, treasury, ledgers, reconciliation, transaction processing, stablecoins, wallets, custody, on-chain payments, risk, underwriting, fraud, identity, or compliance systems is useful.
- Experience building an early-stage product or engineering function, or hiring, mentoring, or leading engineers, is useful.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate Sugar’s core systems using TypeScript and JavaScript.
- Establish engineering standards and best practices across the codebase.
- Take products from concept through architecture, implementation, and production.
- Build integrations with financial, banking, payments, and crypto infrastructure.
- Develop systems handling sensitive financial data and business-critical transactions.
- Translate commercial and customer requirements into product with the founders.
- Shape the technical roadmap and help grow the engineering team.
- Move quickly while maintaining strong standards for financial infrastructure.
