About the Role
You will lead the intellectual property function and execute a global strategy for the small-molecule pipeline and AI-driven discovery platform. You will draft and prosecute patent applications, manage the global portfolio and outside counsel, conduct IP analyses, run invention disclosures, protect trade secrets, support transactions, and oversee IP-related reviews and disclosures.
Requirements
- J.D., active membership in good standing of a U.S. state bar, and USPTO registration
- Advanced degree in chemistry, medicinal chemistry, or a related field; Ph.D. preferred
- 8+ years of life-sciences patent experience in law firms and in-house biotech or pharma
- Recent hands-on experience drafting and prosecuting small-molecule patent applications
- Experience with global patent portfolio strategy
- Experience conducting freedom-to-operate analyses
- Experience handling IP in pharma collaborations and licensing
- Regular use of AI tools in IP practice
- Experience building an in-house IP function preferred
Responsibilities
- Draft, file, and prosecute patent applications
- Manage outside counsel and the global patent portfolio
- Own filing strategy and the IP budget
- Conduct freedom-to-operate, patentability, and landscape analyses
- Run the invention disclosure process and determine inventorship
- Build and maintain a trade-secret program
- Advise on open-source and data licensing
- Lead IP diligence and negotiate IP terms in collaborations, licenses, and transactions
- Set IP positions for commercial contract playbooks
- Use AI tools for IP searching, drafting, office-action responses, and analytics
- Oversee publication review, lifecycle and exclusivity planning, contested proceedings, trademarks, and IP-related SEC disclosures
