About the Role
You will lead welding operations, process qualifications, and structural-integrity assessments for naval applications. You will implement NAVSEA publications, audit code compliance, approve welding procedures, analyze failures, evaluate vendors, develop robotic welding processes, and travel to shipyards and client sites.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering, Metallurgical or Materials Engineering, or a related STEM discipline
- 5+ years of welding engineering experience in defense maritime contracting, naval shipyards, or heavy marine fabrication
- 3+ years developing robotic welding procedures in an industrial environment
- Experience with NAVSEA standards, ship-spec manuals, and military standards
- AWS Certified Welding Engineer or Certified Welding Inspector certification is preferred
- U.S. citizenship
- Possession of or eligibility for a DoD Secret Security Clearance
- Current residence in the Greater Los Angeles region or willingness to relocate
- Experience developing fusion-based weld parameters for shipbuilding steel and aluminum alloys
- Proficiency with GMAW and FCAW
- Industrial robotics experience for welding
- Understanding of weld symbology, print interpretation, and Design of Experiments principles
- Ability to travel 30%–50%
Responsibilities
- Interpret, implement, and deploy NAVSEA technical publications
- Review engineering design packages for compliance with military and AWS welding standards
- Draft, review, and approve Welding Procedure Specifications and Procedure Qualification Records
- Perform root-cause analysis of welding failures using non-destructive testing data
- Conduct technical evaluations of fabrication vendors for NAVSEA compliance
- Run weld parameter-selection experiments
- Develop automated trajectory-generation rules with robotics engineers
- Perform robotic welding experiments for sensors, inspection systems, path planning, welding strategies, and hardware
- Fabricate test coupons and operate robotic welding cells
- Travel to shipyards, client sites, and the Columbus office
