About the Role
You will lead and grow the data engineering organization, set technical direction, and deliver reliable data systems at scale. You will coach and hire engineers, define the data platform architecture and roadmap, improve pipeline reliability and governance, partner with cross-functional leaders, and remain hands-on through architecture reviews, design documents, pairing, and occasional implementation.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in an engineering management role
- Direct experience leading a data engineering or data platform team
- Ability to scale teams and systems through hiring, process, architecture, and delivery
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Player-coach mindset with prior individual contributor experience
- Hands-on familiarity with Snowflake, DBT, or Sigma
- Experience building modern data platforms, including ELT, modeling layers, governance, and self-serve analytics
- Experience with Kafka is preferred
- Experience operating production systems in AWS is preferred
- Exposure to AI/ML or data science workflows is preferred
- Comfort working in TypeScript and Python ecosystems
- Familiarity with data quality testing, lineage, observability, and access control patterns
Responsibilities
- Coach engineers through expectations, feedback, and career development
- Hire and retain engineering talent
- Establish delivery and operational rituals
- Define and evolve the data platform architecture
- Drive the data platform roadmap
- Champion dbt patterns, data contracts, testing, and documentation
- Ensure pipelines and models are accurate, observable, secure, and scalable
- Improve reliability through alerting, SLAs, SLOs, runbooks, and root-cause analysis
- Partner with platform engineering on deployment and cost optimization
- Collaborate with Product, Analytics, Security, and Engineering leaders
- Communicate tradeoffs, risks, and timelines
- Lead architecture reviews, pairing, design documents, and occasional implementation
