About the Role
You will own compute allocation for supercomputing resources, balancing research demand, technical constraints, capacity, hardware suitability, timing, and dependencies. You will work with researchers and infrastructure engineers to improve scheduling, workload placement, and utilization. You will explain allocation decisions, teach teams to estimate compute needs and evaluate tradeoffs, and create practical guidance and tools. You will compare expected and actual usage, refine assumptions, and keep research plans aligned with usable capacity.
Requirements
- Experience making consequential resource allocation or capacity decisions in a complex computing environment
- Technical understanding of distributed systems, machine learning infrastructure, or high-performance computing
- Ability to improve useful output from limited resources
- Ability to teach complex technical ideas through clear explanations and practical examples
- Ability to investigate usage and performance data
- Sound judgment when teams have competing priorities
- Hands-on, collaborative approach with attention to detail and follow-through
- Experience owning compute allocation at an AI research lab or an organization with substantial shared computing resources
- Familiarity with GPU clusters, distributed training, scheduling, and workload placement
- Understanding of networking, storage, reliability, and hardware effects on usable capacity
- Experience building capacity forecasting, allocation, or utilization tools or analyses
- Experience mentoring technical professionals in compute planning and resource management
Responsibilities
- Own compute allocation and develop allocation plans with technical leads
- Evaluate tradeoffs across capacity, hardware suitability, workload size, timing, and dependencies
- Improve scheduling, workload placement, and compute utilization
- Help researchers estimate compute needs and understand allocation decisions
- Develop guidance, examples, and tools for recurring allocation decisions
- Connect research plans with infrastructure capacity and future needs
- Compare expected and actual usage and improve allocation decisions
