Software Integration Engineer
Merlin is a Boston-based aerospace and defense technology company developing AI-powered, aircraft-agnostic autonomy software for fixed-wing aircraft.
About Merlin
Merlin’s Merlin Pilot combines hardware and software intended to perform takeoff-to-touchdown flight functions for military and civil aircraft, supporting reduced-crew and autonomous operations. The operating business began as Apollo Flight Research in 2018, became Merlin Labs in 2020, and is now operated under public parent Merlin, Inc.

About the Role
You will develop and maintain software that connects aircraft avionics, simulation models, test hardware, and engineering tools. You will configure hardware interfaces, support real-time simulations, build telemetry and diagnostic tools, test Linux and embedded deployments, and troubleshoot integration issues with connected systems and laboratory equipment.
Requirements
- Proficiency developing and debugging modern C++ and Python software
- Strong familiarity with Linux host systems
- Experience integrating software with physical hardware, external systems, vendor libraries, or APIs
- Understanding of C++ resource management, multithreading, synchronization, and error handling
- Familiarity with UDP/TCP networking and binary data formats
- Familiarity with timing-sensitive software concepts
- Experience using Git, automated testing, and Jira or comparable issue tracking
- Familiarity with Docker-based application deployment
- Ability to work regularly onsite in the Boston lab
- Authorization to work in the United States without current or future visa sponsorship
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain C++ and Python software connecting avionics, simulation models, test hardware, and engineering tools
- Implement software components and hardware interfaces within the established architecture
- Integrate UEI PowerDNA equipment through vendor SDKs, low-level I/O APIs, and hardware abstraction layers
- Configure and validate ARINC 429, CAN, serial, analog, and discrete interfaces
- Support real-time execution of aircraft simulation models
- Develop telemetry interfaces and data-processing components for UDP, TCP, and messaging systems
- Contribute to asynchronous Rust services for telemetry ingestion, timestamp alignment, displays, and session recording
- Build operator displays and diagnostic tools
- Build, deploy, and troubleshoot software on Linux hosts and embedded targets
- Write unit, smoke, and hardware integration tests and add regression coverage
- Diagnose issues across software, networks, and connected hardware
- Maintain code and configuration changes in Git, track work in Jira, and document interfaces and procedures
