About the Role
You will automate the lifecycle of AWS Aurora instances and help maintain the databases that support the card-issuing platform. You will design highly available and disaster recovery solutions, improve database architecture through partitioning and sharding, and reduce manual work through automation. You will collaborate with engineers on technical initiatives, participate in a 24x7 on-call rotation, investigate and remediate incidents, create design documentation, improve monitoring and alerting with Datadog, and mentor junior engineers.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience as a backend engineer and a bachelor's degree, or 7+ years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree.
- Experience with cloud-native databases, preferably AWS, including Aurora, MySQL, PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, or MongoDB.
- Experience with cloud-based high availability, disaster recovery, distributed systems, replication, and failover.
- Experience with infrastructure as code, automation, and orchestration tools such as Terraform and AWS Step Functions.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, job runners, and deployment automation.
- Understanding of database administration, including internals, query tuning, indexing, and performance metrics.
- Proficiency in Python.
- Experience with Linux commands and shell scripting.
- Experience with monitoring and observability tools, preferably Datadog.
Responsibilities
- Participate in a 24x7 on-call rotation supporting database engineering services.
- Contribute to the technical vision for database maintenance and cloud migration.
- Design high-availability and disaster-recovery database solutions.
- Advance platform architecture, database partitioning, sharding, and database footprint evolution.
- Prioritize automation to reduce manual work.
- Collaborate with engineers across teams on short- and long-term technical initiatives.
- Perform root-cause analysis, remediation, and incident documentation.
- Write design documents and communicate technical decisions and trade-offs.
- Contribute to monitoring and alerting practices using Datadog.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to team standards.
