Level Designer (Music Game)
Skills
About the Role
You will own the design of music-driven gameplay across a rhythm and music game portfolio, from song-level mechanics and charting to the audio-visual feel a player gets in every tap. This is a game design role, not a music production role — you will convert music as raw material into great level design rather than compose music. Your work will directly drive player retention, engagement, and how the music games stand out in a competitive global market.
Requirements
- Strong grasp of music theory, genres, and song structure
- Proven ability to break a song into beats, sections, and mechanic moments that map cleanly to gameplay
- Basic understanding of game design principles and rhythm game mechanics
- Music production proficiency in at least one DAW (FL Studio, Cubase, Ableton, REAPER)
- Ability to cut and edit tracks for game integration
- Basic MIDI signal output understanding
- Data fluency to read level-design performance data (drop-off, revive rate, completion, retention), interpret correlations, and translate findings into design changes
- Portfolio of shipped rhythm/music games (nice-to-have)
- Playing a musical instrument (nice-to-have)
Responsibilities
- Curate and optimize song lists across multiple games and markets
- Research music trends and form clear hypotheses for each song added
- Use performance data to keep the song library fresh and converting
- Collaborate with the Product Owner to plan and promote songs via LiveOps events
- Design level mechanics and charting for each song
- Translate musical structure into gameplay
- Tune difficulty curves, drop points, and revive moments to maximize player engagement
- Drive playtesting and data-led iteration
- Run structured playtests and analyze level-design metrics such as drop-off, revive rate, completion, and satisfaction
- Ship measurable improvements game-over-game
- Collaborate with artists to define the visual theme of each level or song
- Own the creative direction so audio, mechanics, and visuals feel coherent
- Produce sound effects
- Ensure all in-game audio meets quality and device-playback standards
