About the Role

Lead Blockstream’s global legal, compliance, and regulatory functions while advising executive leadership and the Board across corporate governance, commercial transactions, regulatory strategy, compliance, litigation, employment matters, and legal operations.

Requirements

  • JD or equivalent law degree and active bar membership in good standing.
  • 12+ years of legal experience, including substantial in-house leadership experience.
  • Experience as General Counsel, Deputy General Counsel, or senior legal executive.
  • Expertise in complex commercial transactions and technology agreements.
  • Strong knowledge of crypto, blockchain, fintech, securities, payments, AML/KYC, sanctions, privacy, and digital-asset regulations.
  • Experience advising executives and boards on governance, risk, financing, mergers and acquisitions, and organizational structuring.
  • Experience managing multi-jurisdictional legal and compliance matters across the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Asia.
  • Experience building and scaling legal and compliance functions.
  • Experience overseeing litigation, investigations, regulatory inquiries, disputes, and crisis management.
  • Experience managing outside counsel and legal budgets.
  • Strong understanding of intellectual property, technology licensing, and product counseling.
  • Excellent judgment, strategic thinking, communication, negotiation, and leadership skills.

Responsibilities

  • Define and evolve legal and compliance strategy.
  • Advise the Board, executive leadership, and senior management.
  • Guide corporate governance, equity plans, capital raises, mergers and acquisitions, and restructurings.
  • Oversee external counsel, legal budgets, and complex commercial agreements.
  • Support product teams on legal risk, regulatory compliance, token standards, protocols, and integrations.
  • Structure cross-border transactions and operations.
  • Oversee intellectual property protection.
  • Drive regulatory engagement and compliance programs across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Manage legal risk, litigation, investigations, disputes, and crisis response.
  • Hire, mentor, and develop legal, compliance, and contract teams.
  • Build scalable legal infrastructure, policies, playbooks, workflows, and compliance frameworks.
  • Establish legal-function KPIs and promote cross-functional collaboration.
  • Support employment compliance and employment-related disputes.
