About the Role
You will lead failure-analysis investigations and materials-characterization work for vehicle hardware. You will operate laboratory instruments, develop procedures, analyze failure mechanisms, recommend corrective actions, manage laboratory operations, and communicate materials-science findings to stakeholders.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of materials-engineering experience, preferably in aerospace or automotive
- Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Reliability Engineering
- Familiarity with PCBs, PCBAs, electronic components, and moving mechanical assemblies
- Knowledge of solder fatigue, intermetallic growth, conductive anodic filaments, tin whiskers, electromigration, and corrosion
- Experience with interdisciplinary product design from concept to production
- Technical project management experience
- At least 2 years of hands-on experience operating SEMs, microscopes, and X-ray systems
- Familiarity with IPC, JEDEC, MIL, and ASTM standards
- Failure-analysis and materials-characterization proficiency is preferred
- Experience running a materials-characterization or failure-analysis laboratory is preferred
- Environmental-testing experience is preferred
- Familiarity with PCB fabrication, SMT, and polymeric manufacturing processes is preferred
- Python proficiency with NumPy, Pandas, SciPy, Plotly, and Matplotlib is preferred
Responsibilities
- Operate and improve a materials and failure-investigation laboratory
- Develop laboratory procedures for materials characterization, failure analysis, and reporting
- Perform electronics failure analysis and recommend corrective actions
- Drive investigations using 8D, fault-tree, fishbone, and FRACAS methods
- Prepare samples through mechanical cross-sectioning
- Perform dye-and-pry and CSAM analysis
- Use 2D X-ray and computed tomography for electronics failure analysis
- Operate scanning electron microscopes and conduct energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy
- Execute thermal analysis using DSC, TGA, DMA, TMA, and FTIR
- Manage laboratory consumables
- Maintain laboratory equipment, organization, and safety
- Coordinate materials and failure-analysis work with external laboratories
- Educate stakeholders on materials selection and processing
- Stay current on electronic-material and failure-mechanism practices
