About the Role
You will own protection and automation architecture across high- and medium-voltage substations, distribution systems, generation interties, and low-voltage switchgear. You will develop relay settings, perform studies, design SCADA and EPMS integrations, work with utilities, review designs, lead testing and commissioning, and improve protection standards.
Requirements
- 10+ years of power system protection engineering, substation automation, or substation design experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Expertise applying and setting protective relays.
- Experience with short-circuit, coordination, and arc-flash analysis.
- Experience integrating protective relays with SCADA or substation automation using DNP3, Modbus, or IEC 61850.
- Experience with utility interconnection protection requirements.
- Ability to interpret electrical diagrams, schematics, relay panels, and wiring diagrams.
- Experience developing relay test plans and witnessing testing or commissioning.
- Knowledge of IEEE C37, IEEE 1584, NFPA 70/70E, and NERC PRC standards.
Responsibilities
- Own protection philosophy, basis of design, relay settings, and protection one-line templates.
- Specify protective relays and develop settings for transformer, feeder, bus, generator, motor, and arc-flash applications.
- Perform and review short-circuit, coordination, and arc-flash studies.
- Implement transfer, load-shed, and restoration schemes.
- Review protection and control design packages and drive closure on deviations.
- Design substation automation architecture, including IEC 61850, GOOSE, RTUs, HMI, event recording, and time synchronization.
- Integrate relays, meters, and switchgear controls into EPMS and SCADA.
- Define network topology, redundancy, and cybersecurity boundaries for automation systems.
- Work with utilities and grid operators on interconnection protection requirements.
- Develop relay test plans and witness factory and site acceptance testing.
- Support substation energization and resolve field protection issues.
- Lead root-cause analysis of protection operations and misoperations.
- Improve protection settings templates, test procedures, and commissioning checklists.
