About the Role
You will build and maintain the infrastructure, tooling, and automation that enable reliable self-managed GitLab deployments. You will improve Omnibus GitLab, Helm Charts, the GitLab Environment Toolkit, and the GitLab Operator; strengthen installation, upgrade, security, and operational workflows; and create CI/CD automation to validate deployment tooling. You will partner with Security, Distribution, Site Reliability, Release, and Development teams, guide architectural direction, mentor engineers, and contribute to the self-managed delivery roadmap.
Requirements
- Experience operating backend services in production, including deployment, monitoring, and maintenance in Kubernetes- and Helm-based environments.
- Proficiency in Go for building observable and resilient services.
- Working knowledge of Ruby.
- Hands-on experience with infrastructure as code, including Terraform.
- Experience managing infrastructure across Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services, or Microsoft Azure.
- Knowledge of database design, operations, and troubleshooting, especially PostgreSQL.
- Knowledge of secure, scalable, and reliable deployment practices, including service scaling and rollout strategies.
- Familiarity with Prometheus and Grafana observability tools and patterns.
- Ability to work in large codebases and coordinate across distributed cross-functional teams using clear written communication.
- Ability to write user-focused documentation and implementation guides.
Responsibilities
- Maintain and evolve the Omnibus GitLab package for reliable self-managed deployments.
- Develop and improve GitLab Helm Charts for scalable, consistent deployments.
- Enhance the GitLab Environment Toolkit, validated reference architectures, and GitLab Operator for Kubernetes-native lifecycle management.
- Improve installation, upgrade, and operational workflows across deployment methods.
- Partner with Security to address vulnerabilities and deliver secure deployment defaults.
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines to validate and test deployment tooling.
- Collaborate with Distribution, Site Reliability, Release, and Development teams to integrate features into deployment methods.
- Guide architectural direction, mentor backend engineers, and contribute to the self-managed delivery roadmap.
