On-orbit Geometric Calibration Engineer
South Park Commons is a community and early-stage venture firm that helps talented founders and technologists move from an idea (-1) to a company (0). It runs a no-cost, no-equity residency program for ideation and exploration, and provides $1M to $10M in funding for founders ready to build venture-scale companies.
About South Park Commons
South Park Commons operates a talent-dense community of technical founders, researchers, and domain experts who test ideas, find collaborators, and build conviction on what to build and how to build it. Its offering spans two stages: a six-month Residency with no cost or equity focused on ideation and exploration, and Funding of $1M to $10M for members ready to build venture-scale companies. Beyond capital, SPC provides learning forums on frontier topics (embodied AI, reinforcement learning, energy-efficient computing, AI in biotech), live programming with industry leaders, partner collaboration from a team of former founders and operators, social scaffolding to counter the isolation of early company building, and up to $1M in credits and perks from partners like Anthropic, OpenAI, Microsoft, GCP, and AWS. SPC has spaces in San Francisco, New York, and Bengaluru, and its community has produced companies such as Render, Luma Labs, Pilot, Comun, Anthropic, Unit21, and Profound.
Skills
About the Role
You will focus on geometric calibration and geospatial data processing of unique multi-spectral infrared data from the FireSat camera. You will design and implement camera geometry models, geolocation calibration, and advanced geospatial processing algorithms — including bundle adjustment, orthorectification, and atmospheric corrections — that are foundational to the quality and accuracy of FireSat data products. You will complete on-orbit geometric calibration of new FireSat satellites during the commissioning phase and improve on the current approach by building novel, scalable geometric calibration and processing systems that grow to support dozens of satellites. You will also write production-ready code, perform geospatial data engineering, implement and operate production processing systems, and engage with derived product development and external customer needs across multiple customer bases.
Requirements
- PhD with 5+ years of experience in a relevant domain (remote sensing, photogrammetry, geodesy, astronomy, physics, optical engineering, electrical engineering, robotics, or related field); or MS with 8+ years industry experience; or BS with 10+ years industry experience
- Strong mathematical skills, particularly in geometry, linear algebra, statistics, and modeling
- Python-based development and analysis skills
- Ability to work with a distributed, interdisciplinary team (scientists, engineers, data support)
Responsibilities
- Complete on-orbit geometric calibration of new FireSat satellites during the commissioning phase
- Design and implement geometric calibration of multispectral infrared imagery, including camera geometry modeling and geolocation calibration
- Develop and implement geolocation calibration algorithms to validate and correct on-orbit pointing knowledge
- Continuously improve geospatial processing algorithms including bundle adjustment, orthorectification, and atmospheric corrections
- Research and develop metrics for and improvements to geometric accuracy, image registration, and spatial data quality
- Implement and operate production pipelines for geometric calibration and geospatial data processing
- Write production-ready code
- Work cross-functionally within the team and across Muon to design, build, and maintain operational services
- Learn new topics as needed such as measurement techniques, geospatial data engineering, software engineering, and customer domain-specific implications
