About the Role
You will design, develop, test, and document packaging systems for energetic materials, propellants, and small solid rocket motors. You will select materials and preservation methods, investigate packaging failures, coordinate qualification testing, train personnel, and ensure hazardous-materials shipping compliance.
Requirements
- Be at least 21 years old
- Pass pre-employment drug screening and state and federal background checks
- Be eligible to obtain and maintain state and federal explosives licenses
- Have 3+ years of industrial packaging design and development experience
- Have hands-on experience selecting and sizing cushioning materials
- Know MIL-STD-2073-1, UN dangerous-goods packaging requirements, and DOT hazardous-materials regulations
- Hold a current DOT Hazmat Employee training certificate or obtain one within 90 days of hire
- Produce packaging drawings, work instructions, bills of materials, and test reports
- Understand ITAR and EAR export-control requirements
- Be able to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance
- Be eligible for access to licensed explosives facilities
- Meet U.S. Person or required export-authorization requirements
- Lift up to 50 pounds as required
- Travel up to 15%
Responsibilities
- Design packaging systems, including containment, cushioning, closures, and shipping containers
- Select packaging materials based on product, chemical, electrostatic, and environmental requirements
- Size and configure cushioning using cushion curve data, fragility assessments, and drop-height analysis
- Create packaging drawings, material specifications, bills of materials, work instructions, and data sheets
- Define preservation methods, including desiccants, moisture barriers, corrosion inhibitors, inert gas purging, and hermetic sealing
- Evaluate packaging-material compatibility with energetic formulations
- Investigate packaging damage and complaints, perform root-cause analysis, and implement corrective actions
- Plan and execute packaging qualification testing
- Evaluate ESD and HERO risks for applicable packaging configurations
- Analyze test results and improve designs until they meet acceptance criteria
- Align packaging timelines and materials with production schedules
- Train production and shipping personnel on approved assembly and inspection procedures
- Ensure packaging complies with DOT, IATA, military, and ATF requirements
- Define required hazard labels, placards, markings, and shipping-documentation templates
