About the Role
You will manage senior and staff engineers working on Git and related infrastructure. You will drive long-horizon work on performance, scalability, maintainability, and Git architecture; balance upstream development with product priorities; support engineers’ growth; and align with distributed stakeholders through clear written communication.
Requirements
- Experience managing engineering teams with direct reports, including hiring, performance management, and career development
- Management philosophy focused on engineer agency, ownership, consistency, follow-through, and technical judgment
- Ability to guide specialized engineers through ambiguity, technical tradeoffs, and upstream open-source development
- Written communication and remote asynchronous collaboration skills
- Track record of delivering ambiguous, long-horizon technical projects
- Knowledge of maintainability, technical debt, and long-term platform viability
- Hands-on background in version control systems, distributed systems, storage engines, or low-level infrastructure
- Ability to engage with systems code and architecture
- Experience with C, Go, or similar performance-sensitive environments
Responsibilities
- Manage a team of senior and staff engineers working on the Git version control system and Git-related infrastructure
- Build a culture of technical rigor, clear accountability, and ownership
- Drive execution on long-horizon work across performance, scalability, maintainability, and core Git architecture
- Balance upstream open-source development with product and infrastructure priorities
- Support engineers’ growth through feedback, mentoring, career development, and stretch opportunities
- Foster written communication and asynchronous alignment across a distributed team
- Partner with downstream teams and stakeholders on performance, feature design, and roadmap clarity
- Represent the team in stakeholder conversations about Git direction, performance, and scalability
