About Scuttlebutt

Scuttlebutt is a decentralised secure gossip platform and social network built around a peer-to-peer gossip protocol. Rather than storing data on a central server, messages are cryptographically signed and passed directly between friends' devices, meaning the data is localised, distributed, and can be exchanged even without an internet connection. Users choose from a variety of independently built client applications (such as Patchwork, Patchbay, Manyverse, Patchfox and Planetary) that all interact with the same underlying SSB protocol and network, similar to how different browsers can access the same web. The project maintains protocol documentation, guides and a handbook for developers who want to build modules, pubs, or entirely new applications on the SSB network. Its community is oriented toward individuals and developers interested in decentralisation, data ownership, privacy, and community-run infrastructure rather than corporate-owned platforms; it is supported in part through the Secure Scuttlebutt Consortium on Open Collective.
